Why period rest is a form of productivity

Somewhere along the way, rest became something you earn. You work first, you achieve first, you exhaust yourself first — and only then, if there's time left, you rest. It's a strange contract, and your cycle never signed it.

The first days of your period aren't a productivity failure. Physiologically, they're a rebuild. Iron stores drop, progesterone falls off a cliff, and your body redirects energy toward the work of shedding and renewing. The tiredness you feel isn't laziness — it's an accurate reading of what's happening inside.

The cost of pushing through

Studies on cycle-aware training consistently show the same thing: high-intensity effort during menstruation costs more and returns less. Recovery takes longer. Cortisol runs higher. The workout you force on Day 2 is the workout your body pays for until Day 5.

The alternative isn't doing nothing. It's doing the right things: gentle walks, warmth, iron-rich meals — dal, dates, sesame, leafy greens — and sleep treated as non-negotiable rather than optional.

“Rest during your period isn't the absence of productivity. It's the part of the cycle that makes the rest of it possible.”

Try this for one cycle: protect the first two days. Say no to what can wait. Move gently. Eat warm. And then notice what your follicular week feels like when it isn't built on a deficit. That's the experiment. Your body already knows the result.
